Ollie Gabriel, known to fans as The Wizard of OG, is a musical chameleon whose career has spanned genres, from soul to rock to country. With his rich, authentic sound and magnetic storytelling, Gabriel is making waves in the country music scene. In this recent interview, the Louisiana-born artist opens up about his roots, his new single Country Boy, and his vision for the future.
Finding Home in Country Music
Ollie Gabriel’s foray into country music isn’t a departure—it’s a return. “Country music for me is a part of my genesis. It’s more of a coming home,” Gabriel shares. Raised in southwest Louisiana, his earliest musical influences included icons like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Merle Haggard.
“Country was everywhere growing up,” he recalls. “I’ve always sung it and loved it, but I explored more urban pop genres in my early career because I was living in LA. Country has a special authenticity, and I feel like I had to live more life to really stand out in the genre. Here I am.”
The Story Behind Country Boy
Gabriel’s latest single, Country Boy, is a heartfelt ode to his Southern roots. “It’s an homage to my upbringing—the cookouts, the country characters, the horses, and the wildlife,” he explains. The track radiates pride in his heritage, celebrating the grit and authenticity instilled by his rural upbringing.
“I’ve traveled the world and lived in different cities, but my country roots gave me the resilience to get through tough times. Country Boy is a celebration of that,” he says.
Living the Lyrics
For Gabriel, songwriting is deeply personal. “At this point in my life, everything I write is me. That’s the only way I can connect with all of my soul,” he says.
In Country Boy, every line reflects his life story. “The first line—‘If it fly I pluck ’em’—is a nod to my family’s duck business back home. I’ve proudly plucked many ducks,” he laughs. “It’s all in there: sugarcane fields, gravel roads, bonfires. It didn’t take much for us to have fun growing up.”
Resilience and Faith in Music
Themes of resilience and authenticity are the backbone of Gabriel’s music. “My whole life is a testimony of resilience, faith, and authenticity,” he says. “I’ve walked away from situations that didn’t align with who I was. Authenticity is everything.”
Gabriel credits his faith in God as the driving force behind his artistry. “It’s what carries me and who I give the glory to. That energy of faith is in my music.”
Icons and Inspirations
Among his country music heroes, Garth Brooks holds a special place. “He’s an icon to me. His music was the soundtrack of my elementary school years,” Gabriel says. He’s also deeply inspired by Ray Charles, whose multi-genre approach mirrors Gabriel’s own musical journey.
“Hardy’s song A Rock really got to me,” he admits. “It’s raw and soulful. I can tell when music is connected to an artist’s soul or if it’s just performative. Hardy’s songs touch me.”
A Unique Perspective in Country Music
Gabriel’s diverse background sets him apart in the genre. “I’m a military veteran, I’ve traveled the world, been homeless and broke, and made lots of money,” he reflects. “I rap, sing, write, produce, and compose. God gave me the gift to make all types of music.”
Gabriel believes his life experiences allow him to connect with audiences across divides. “I can bring people together in a way I don’t see anyone else doing. My music speaks to people’s souls and strengthens their faith.”
What’s Next for Ollie Gabriel?
Following Country Boy, fans can expect a series of releases showcasing Gabriel’s versatility. “The next single will really get the dance floor packed—guaranteed!” he teases. “But trust me, I’ve got amazing ballads and deep songs that will tug at your heart coming soon.”
Gabriel is also branching out into entrepreneurship with the launch of AURA LOUNGE in Nashville. “It’s a 10,000-square-foot entertainment venue where we’ll host concerts and community events. I want it to be a premier entertainment destination in the city,” he shares excitedly.
Ollie Gabriel’s journey is proof that music, much like life, is about evolution. With Country Boy and a slate of exciting projects on the horizon, he’s not just stepping into the country spotlight—he’s claiming it.
